I saw on another board where Mark (Softhackle) posted a recipe for his version of the Breadcrust. In his directions he used two grouse feathers. I wish I had. By the time I had wrapped my single feather to the head of the fly, the stem was huge. This made for a bulky, awkward looking head.

Over 25 years ago, the breadcrust was a very hot pattern in the Roaring Fork Valley here in Colorado. Where the flyshops would sell most fly patterns for .65 cents, the Breadcrust commanded upwards of $2.00. Ruffed Grouse was hard to come by, and the drawn out method of removing the pith from the stems of the tail feathers made tying the pattern a long drawn out process.

Being ultra lazy, I didnt spend much time trying to tie the Breadcrust. That changed when I saw Marks technique.

Here is a link to the way I was shown years ago of how to tie this pattern. Very drawnout process.

Dubbin, Howdy;

Bothe look good, although the first does look a smidign thick at the head... :)

That 'other' version does appear to be long enough to be a cause for folks
to want to take a nap about 1/2 way through.....

23 and a wake-up :)

I've been gone all week. Another business trip to China (Beijing & Hangzhou this time). I will post some photos tomorrow, when I get settled back in.

Man, I've got a LOT of catching up to do.
