Hello everyone,
Does anyone else use the fur of their pets to tie Soft Hackle flies? This is off my Jack Russells and it works well but have yet to try it on the fish but it does give a buggy appearance to the fly
Hook: 14 Tiemco
Thread: 6/0 Black
Rib: Copper Wire
Body: Jack Russell fur
Hackle: Ginger Hen

Gig,
Great looking fly, and wonderful use of your free roaming dubbing boxes. A couple of really old recipes call for the hair from the back of a liver coloured Spaniel's ear. My dog just happens to be a liver and white Springer Spaniel. I'll have to dress a couple of those flies.

Yep.
Have used guard hair and under fur from both of my German Wirehaired Pointers, the Rabbit (when we had it), various cats that have come and gone (we are without a cat at present) and wool from any of the three pet sheep.
There have been times we have raised a calf or two here at home and some neat materials can be snipped or combed from those as well!
Excellent looking pet supplied fly you have presented here though.

I've heard many times of folks using pet hair for tying.
My first wife had reddish hair, but would get really annoyed when she woke up and I had scissors and a plastic bag in my hands.

Too bad, made a great dubbing mix with light hare's ear.
My 2nd(and last) wife is blond and 6 ft tall. Helluva reach. End of story.

Gig, looks like you've found a nice resource for a classic looking fly. Great tie.
Rodger....we pick our battles, don't we. How many days to go?

This subject comes up every once in a Blue Moon.
Before
After
I do use my pets fur for dubbing. I have some saved from an old mutt that helped me raise my children. I also have some from an Orange cat my wife and I had before we were blessed with kids. It makes me smile when I can catch a fish with a pattern tyed up with their fur.

Skues had a pattern called McCaskie's Green Cat.

Hook; 12 - 16 wet.
Silk: Yellow Pearsall.*
Tail: Honey dun cock fibres.
Body: Green Dubbing (SLF), touch dubbed on yellow silk.
I did not have any Emerald Green Cat Fur.
Hackle: Medium dun hen.
*Norman McCaskie & Skues used Pearsall's Gold (orange)6A silk,
and dun Persian cat fur dyed in picric (36hrs) to an emerald green.
ps I don't think the grey persian cat was dunked in the picric.

Brilliant flies, guys! Inspiringly "fishy" dressings (sincere compliment).
