This is a pattern that caught my attention in the book Fish Flies by terry Hellekson. Appears like it would be a great little general practitioner pattern.

Hook: Mustad 3906B #14
Thread: black ( I used gray silk)
Tail: Natural gray goose biots tied on in a "v"
Abdomen: dubbed with natural gray hare
Thorax: dubbed with dark grey lamb's wool
Hackle: grizzly hen hackle ( I used grizzly hen dyed dun)

Carl, this would catch my eye as well. It ticks all the boxes as they say. And this is especially well done. You're on fire. It's so great to see your stuff.

Your pattern reminds me of the typical Skues profile, like one I photographed last summer.

Very nice and as you say, should be an excellent GP pattern.

Lance, how cool is that? Those flies really are a nice match, and thanks so much for showing an actual Skues fly, with such detail. The hackle length defies all the diagrams printed in most books. That is a treat to see.

Being somewhat dyslexic I thought your title was the Gray Grunt Nymph. Thinking it was a tribute fly to the Confederate Infantry, I had to look. No matter the reason for opening the thread, I'm glad I did. Your fly is a wonder. Great shape and proportions, the colors are perfect. The fact that it's so close to a Skue's fly is uncanny and totally cool. Well done, Carl. Looking forward to seeing you at Albany this spring.
