Devil's Crook Flymph

Post by Old Hat » Fri Jan 04, 2013 1:05 pm

Nothing too creative here. Traditionally a winged pattern. A favorite of mine.

Hook: Syl Nemes wet fly hook #15
Thread: Pearsall's silk thread, grey (waxed with a dark cobbler's wax)
Body: hare's poll, natural, in a dubbing loop
Hackle: partridge back feather

Fantastic dressing Carl. The markings on you partridge feathers are wonderful. Perfect compliment to the body coloration.

Outstanding! I agree with Ray about the hackle, really makes this one pop.
Really buggy, the fish are gonna be all over this!

Ruard, I don't know.

The original pattern uses a partridge quill wing and dates to about 1840, first published in the Fishing Gazette and coming from a Stephen Braithwaite of Knaresborough. From my source anyway.

Looking back at the pattern, I just realized that it is most often and originally referred to as just the Devil Crook. I have probably mistakenly been calling it the Devil's Crook for a few year's now.

Thanks guys. I have a couple color phases of partridge. I search for the back feathers which have a nice red band in them. The wild bird's I get tend to be more strikingly marked than what you can buy in the shops.

Seems like the sub-imago of this one:

I have to agree.Once I saw it, I knew I would never forget it. I could be happy fishing that fly for a whole season and enjoy it even if it didn't catch anything.

(I'm envious of that partridge, it tops it off beautifully).
