FLYMPH FORUM

Using the SBS provided by letumgo I decided to try my hand at the technique he used for his damsel pattern. I was tieing Mahogany Baetis nymphs at the time, so those are the materials I used.

Hook - Cabelas model 04, size 20 ( Tiemco 101 style)
Thread- Sheer 14/0 dark Brown
Tail - Pheasant Tail dyed Brown
Abdomen - Mahogany Micro Tubing
Thorax - Mahogany Superfine dubbin
Hackle - Dark Furnace



Nymph version
Hook- TMC 200R, size 20
Wing Case/Legs Polypropolene yarn colored Brown

You learn quickly DUBBN ... that flymph hackle is really nice, especially on such a small hook. They all look terrifically buggy, but that first one really stikes a chord with me.

Size 20? Un-fricken-believable! WOW! (jaw still hanging wide open...)

FYI, when Jim Slattery was visiting to help me identify the vintage flies, he assigned the name Mahogany Flymph to one tied by my Dad, Vernon S. Hidy. I will be publishing this image in the upcoming book. I've attached it below. (Can you dig the purple tying silk?)
No harm in having different patterns out there with the same name. I think we are all used to that. Just look at the Tups.

Wayne, I have been out of pocket for a bit and won't be able to catch up on all the latest posts, but I saw that hackle work on your flymph and has to offer up a well done. These are both very tempting looking flies.

Lance, what size is your fathers mahogany flymph. I believe there were quite a few in his wallet and of of couple sizes.

That is exquisit. Really like the yarn on the nymph version. Di you tye in each strand seperately. It sure looks like that...but hey it is just size 20...

I swear, Wayne ... I have no idea how you manage to get those evenly spaced multiple wraps of hackle on flies that small. Both your eyes and your hands have to be much steadier than mine. Here's the best I've been able to do, and although it will probably fool a fish, it's not nearly as technically impressive as your Mahogany Flymph.
