Nemes' Tup's Indispensable

Post by Old Hat » Tue Jan 29, 2013 4:34 pm

Here is Syl Nemes pattern for the Tup's. Pattern came from "The Soft Hackled Fly Addict" and Nemes' lists it as one of his top 20 patterns (#7)

Original Dressing:
Hook: Gaelic Supreme Syl Nemes wet fly hook #14 ( I thought hook was appropriate :D )
Body: 2/3rds yellow silk floss
Thorax: Light pink and orange fur
Hackle: Light partridge dyed iron blue dun

Very nice!
Almost dark Tup-ish. :D You are getting that hackle to really stand out in your photos now, nice look.

This fly is one of the reasons I dyed the partridge. Nemes' has a couple patterns that he uses it for.

He wasn't as picky about the Tup's dubbing.

Beautiful fly...there is an egg shape to it with the dubbing too.

Yup, a beautiful fly, impeccably dressed. I like it, a lot. You'll have to share your dying secret when we meet up at Albany.

In another string Dubbn commented upon the similarity in color of some Tups dubbing and trout eggs. I did a little Googling and turned up photos of trout hatchlings with the egg sac still serving as their source of nutrition. These are called sac fry, and some fly tiers have imitated them. But I wonder — could part of the success of Tups patterns (like this one of yours Carl) be their resemblance to infant trout?

Thanks everyone.

Lance, we could only guess but it is very plausible.

Certainly plausible. Interesting hypothesis, Lance.
