Brown and Sulphur Nymph
Hook - Daiichi Model 1150 / Size 10
Thread - Bennechi 12/0 Thread (Primrose/Pale Yellow)
Abdomen - Body Quills (Colors BQ-03 and BQ-33 / sorry I do not know the names of the colors - two shades of orangy-brown - Thanks Karsten)
Underbody - Tying thread wrapped in multiple layers to help form a tapered shape
Legs/Wing Case - Burnt Turkey Tail Fibers (Natural)
Thorax - Beaver Dubbing (Brown)
The head of the fly is colored with a Prismacolor marker (Sand color), to blend better with the body.

I really like the look of the burnt turkey tail fibers as a wing case. They have a nice insect exoskeleton look to them.

The tail fibers are tyed in with the tips facing out over the eye. I then folded the butt ends forward, forming a loop. Once the thorax area was dubbed, I folded the loop over the top, forming the wing case. The excess it trimmed off, and then the tips are pulled back forming the legs. Next time I need to shorten the legs, so they end at the rear of the thorax.

I just noticed I have only five turkey fibers. I should have used six, for symmetry. Good thing fish can't count.

This is impressive, Ray. I like the thought that you put into the construction and the realistic look of your result.

Looks like a great immature flymph to me! Can't wait to see the emerger phase!

Note on the color choice for the wing case:
The natural turkey tail fibers also seem to be a good choice for the color of the wing case. The wing bud area of natural nymphs darken, just before emerging occurs. Fish may key in on the dark coloration as a sign of a vulnerable insect.

I'd love to hear what folks have to say about this. Discussion is very welcome. Feel free to take this thread where it may go (same goes for all my posts).

Ray, I don't mind the longer "legs". In my eye they would be a fair representation of Caddis antenna in a hatching bug.

Has anyone else used the synthetic spooled "Body Quill" material before? Are the any tips you can offer? I wrapped two different color strands at the same time. I am wondering if the material is supposed to be twisted before wrapping it forward.

This is very similar to (color wise that is) to the sulphur dries that Bill tied for us (and kicked our butts with) in Roscoe last season! It was great to watch him discect the situation as he called on his years of experience and then put the right pattern on the water and was very succesful with it! I am wondering if your pattern, fished under the rise, would get the same results? Please take a few of these along this year and give them the ol'college try! I'll be anxious to hear the results if the sulphurs are still making a showing! Great looking pattern Ray!

Ray, only stuff I have used is the UTC offering on spools and I am not that impressed with it. I am unsure if it comes in various "gauges" like wire, the stuff I have is very fine and might do sub size 20 hooks ok, but is a bit fine for #14-16 which are my go-to fly sizes for fishing, Biot or stripped peacock herl work better for me.

I haven't tried it myself since I rarely use synthetics ( being a much too noble person).
Do I have to use smilies here? I have told you I feel childish when using them, haven't I?
