Playing with PMD's

Post by Old Hat » Wed Feb 20, 2013 5:40 pm

The PMD swap is going to be the ruin of me. I have tied at least a dozen variations trying to stretch the creativity level a bit. I have a few standard PMD patterns I use, but am trying to explore materials a bit. These are slight variations of my proven patterns.

Carl,

I like all three, but the shucked swimmer keeps calling out to me "fiiiiiiish meeeeee". Getting kind of eerie.

Sublime PMD's Carl, hard to pick a fav. so I'll take a dozen of all three buddy. ;)
I especially love the thought put into picking the feather for the body on the 2nd fly to achieve the colour transition. It's the masterful work we've all come to expect from you.

Carl - They are all wonderful, but the bottom one is calling to me. I am glad you are finding a challenge in the swap. That was one of the things I enjoyed so much about your tups swap. I cranked out a number different flies, trying to find the one I wanted to submit.

Thanks everyone. Of the three here, I do like the spider and the Shucked Swimmer better. The body on the spider is simply some pheasant dyed ginger, but as Karsten pointed out was dyed very nicely for color transitioning. The Swimmer is a pattern design that I use a lot for mayflies that often emerge in slower water or lakes (started as a callibeatis pattern). Twitched very slightly just under the surface during an active hatch and it does a nice job of mimicking an insect just struggling to get out of the shuck.

Excellent work, all three are very inspirational for someone struggling to come to grips with the pattern and what may suit its imitations.

Old hat, Howdy;

Great patterns, each and every one...
I'll second what Jeff (Mm), said. Been trying to come up with a suitable
pattern, figured one out just 2 days ago, so, as usual, I'm getting a late start on this.

I really like the spider pattern, very unique.

I'm also sympathetic to your dilemma, I just haven't found the right combination for my PMD submission either, tried a few combinations but haven't quite achieved what I envisioned! I guess I just need to take another trip to my local fly shop for that one ingredient!
