Olives work for me year round on the Freestone rivers. The thing I like about them, I don't need a fancy pattern to be successful. I have a lot of different Olive patterns in my fly boxes. They range from thread bodied flies to Midge tubing with a wire core. These patterns fall in between somewhere. I will start using them when the rivers start to dirty a bit. Perhaps they represent the big Green Drakes that are preparing to emerge in a few weeks to a few months (June to September), depending on the river. Perhaps they are just darn good attractor patterns.
I should tie some up with a Peacock thorax. That would be more traditional. We'll see. ;)

Good old PT's tied well...... you can't beat them. :D
The PT is one of those patterns that will catch trout pretty much anywhere in the world they live in- no specific match the hatch, they just work and are one of the great "old world" fall back patterns you can rely upon....... least they are for me.
Nice ties Dubb, I like to keep mine a little cleaner in the thorax, not sure why but I have never really had much luck with "full" thorax models where the dubbing washes back to cloak the abdomen- (just an observation and not a recommendation!) Nice full flumed Peacock herl though...... that is a must add for a few. ;)

Wayne,

Like most everyone else, I love pheasant tail flies, and these are fine examples. I have pheasant tails in a bunch of dyed colors and they make wonderful tails and abdomens. For some reason trout just can't seem to resist a PT fly. I do like adding that other trout magnet, peacock herl, as a thorax.

Wayne, I like these olive PT's very much. With all the spiders and flymphs in my boxes, they are easily matched by very similar herl bodied softies. I rather like the livelier thorax. When tossed upstream I believe the thorax helps in the profile department and can be a bonus in terms of action and mimicry. That being said, a PT Softie doesn't need any help or any interpretation on my part. They do very well without me. These are nicely done.

Wayne, both are sure enough fish catchers. But something about that second one is just captivating. :D
