I had Five, size 20 Mustad 37160 hooks laying loose on my tieing table and thought I would throw a few more Hydropsychidae together. This time with PMD colored Ostrich herl as the thorax. The ostrich herl has been the ticket this time of year in high murky waters.

Hook - Mustad 37160, size 20. No idea why this is listed as a size 20. Looks closer to a size 16 scud hook to me.
Thread/Abdomen - Uni, 8/0 in Tan
Rib- Olive Midge Tubing with a Brown wire core
Thorax- PMD colored Ostrich Herl
Collar - India Hen Cape, Honey Dun.

Wayne, it's not hard to see why these have been preforming so well for you. It's an interesting hook to support such an active body.

Those are great looking flies. I always wonder how good those hooks would be for actually hooking a fish, and if they would have a tendency toward hooking a fish on the outside of the mouth, which sometimes happens with regular-shaped hooks. All that aside, those are nice ties, my friend.

For me, the jury is still out on these hooks. I have not hooked enough trout with them to really form an opinion.

Wayne - If you notice a difference in hook up effectiveness, you may want to try a few with an offset hook point. When we were at John Shaner's last week, I noted that a lot of the older patterns had offset points. Please report back, when you form an opinion.

Thanks for the comments folks. Being on the small side, i did not think a off set hook would be necessary, but I am going to try it. I have used these hooks for egg patterns for a year now. I have to say my landing percentage is not that stellar with these hooks. Now the Mustad C67S, is another story. My landing success is excellent with this model.

Might be all in my head as well. I havent kept any notes.

My question on the holding capacity of these hooks was strictly theoretical, as I have never hooked a fish on a fly tied on one of these hooks. I do have an ancient box of these in size 12 in my stash, and have tied a few flies on them, but have never actually fished with one. So I guess I am just an armchair theorist.

That is a very cool looking pattern and way cool looking hook!
Kind of reminds me a little of the 420 Kamasan Sedge hook or the Yorkshire Sedge hooks. I do not know how the fish see them, but that kind of shape versus straight shank hooks give some kind of illusion of life to me, instead of the regimented look of a straight shank.
