I like the potential bucktail has as both ribbing, and in this case as a 'quill alternative'.

Purple Buck
Hook: Wet fly, up eye #12 (old-old stock, no identification)
Thread: Benecchi 12/0, black
Hackle: Andalusian Blue hen (or dark dun)
Body: Bucktail, dyed purple
Coating: Varnish, clear

Very interesting concept, one I am not sure I have seen anywhere else. :D
The natural taper of the fibre gives a nice taper to the body with progressive steps in each segmentation.
Was it a pain in the butt to wrap? Does it behave well or want to twist, unwrap and or jump back? Did you pre-treat or soak the fibre before wrapping?

The Andalusian hackle kick you are on does no harm to this pattern either. ;)

So, not only novel and practical....... but easy to use as well. Brilliant. :D

Neat-O! I like the idea of bucktail as a quill sub too. I've heard moose mane used as a quill sub, but not bucktail. I will be plagiarizing your idea int the future. Thanks, Hans.

PS - That hook is fantastic. I love the vintage look.
