Hen, Muskrat and #19

Too hot to fish around here, so it's time to create some fall patterns. Orange seems to work late in the year, and muskrat dubbing just seems like a good match for the dark dun hackle.

Hook: Daiichi 1640, #14
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer, #19 Hot Orange
Hackle: Collins hen, iron dun
Body: Muskrat underfur twist dubbed on thread

Classically handsome fly Bill. It has a wonderful vintage quality. Nicely composed photo, too. The background compliments the coloration of the fly.

Note to self - add an iron dun Collins neck to my "need it" list... :D

Very nice looking fly. You must have had lots of "practice". I wish mine were this neat.

I gravitate to the fuller thorax at times myself. This is a great little combo. #19 should really glow through the muskrat. I'm looking forward to seeing this play out this fall.

That is a real beauty. There is almost a glowing sheen to the body that lends to a belief in the fish taking properties of this pattern.
Does help that it is extremely well executed and photographed. :D

Bill,
This pattern is insanely beautiful! You are right! Nothing says fall like something orange! I am sooo impressed with what you create! This one gets added to the "must do" list!

Bill,

I liked the looks so much of this fly that I copied it. Except I had to use a 3399A for the hook.
