Here is a black gnat I tied from the recipe in "The Art of Tying the Wet Fly."
I substituted black dyed pheasant tail for the crow specified in the book, with starling hackle and scarlet silk thread.

Sweet fly John. One that would fish very well here with our dark small mayfly nymphs.
Nice work on the photography, excellent tying.
Finding old dressings in older books is a fun way of testing the old grey matter, often there is a written pattern and no colour plate for reference.

JohnP, Howdy;
Attempted to tye some of those for a swap a while back,...
Starling isn't easy to work with and you've done a very good job with it!
Your photo skills are also doing better with each effort ...

Thanks fellas. I built a photo box, but I can see my focus was soft on this fly. Still working the bugs out.

John, the pheasant looks great on this one. It's one of my all time favorites. Nice shot. Thanks for posting this.

Great tying and photo work John. Very good. I normally do the same material sub with the pheasant. A very productive pattern.

A really nice fly, JohnP. Your hackling job is super.
