Cold weather, reduced foliage cover, and low flows on the Gunpowder require small flies fished relatively deep to entice takes from picky wild brown trout. Here is a black and tan job that I'm hoping will do the job.
Hook: Daiichi 1530, Size #16
Thread: Sheer 14/0, black
Hackle: Starling
Tag/Rib: Fine gold wire
Body: 50/50 blend of grey cat underfur and hare's mask

Bill - This one has the look of a "capital killer". I'd fish that in a heart beat. Kudos!

I would not reserve that one just for Winter.
There are a lot of good features in that wee fly, Brown trout should love it.

That's funny, Hank. Actually, it's from a cat that belonged to a friend of Doug, and he sent some of it over here. And thanks, Jeff -- I'm hoping you're right.

Love that fly. I can't imagine any fish turning it down.

Bill, good lookin' tie. If I were a fish, I would certainly give it a second look.

Bill, this should drop down rather well and hopefully make contact with Gunpowder residents. It's a perfect furry, juicy, little snack. It's great to see Doug's cat play a role in this pattern. Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you folks. As I continued to tie up a supply of these, they gradually morphed into a more flymph-like pattern. I started putting the dubbing into a dropped loop brush and tying the hackle in by the stem, wrapping it back two turns before bringing the thread forward for the tie-off. The result is a bit less bulky and, I think, a tad more buggy ...
