Hares Ear & Snipe
Hook - Daiichi 1510/Size 8
Thread - Black UNI-Thread (6/0)
Hackle - Snipe (coverlet feather)
Rib - Narrow Gold Metal Oval Tinsel
Tail - Snipe (tail feather from lower back)
Body - Hares Ear Dubbing (Dark Olive)

I like the look of the shorter tail better for some reason.

Note - The flies look pretty scraggly because I roughed them up quite a bit with velcro to get the dubbing fibers to stick out along the body. The flies are rough looking, but that was what I was going for.

Second Note - This is the first tying I have tyed with snipe feathers. I was surprised with how delicate they are and how fine the center stem is. They seem to be more delicate than partridge feathers. The feathers seem to have a bit more webbing on them (the fibers cling together more) and are very soft.

I like hares ear for that reason,in a split thread or dubbingloop it looks even more roughed.

Ray, this is a really nice looking pattern. That wide rib gives it an old Wet fly look. It seems like a very productive assembly. The proportions are nice too. I think it would take me a few attempts to get it to look right on a size 8 hook. Technically, isn't that a streamer?

This pattern will tear it up where I am from. I haven't ever used flat tinsel much, pretty much had forgotten about it. How durable do you find it to be? I have had issues in the past.

Scott - I haven't fished this fly so I can not comment on it's durability. I am hoping that this fly is a durable, since the rib is depressed into the dubbing body. The tinsel is an oval metal tinsel which I have also used on bucktails. Occasionally fish can break the oval metal rib, but the fly is still fishable once the broken rib is trimmed off. I just like the look of the shiny ribbing against the dubbed body.

Thanks Mark. I can see you have been digging deeply into past postings on this site. There are over six hundred wonderful patterns (643 patterns and counting). I enjoy going back and rediscovering everyones patterns. Glad you diggin' this site.

OH YEAH! i'm diggin deep into this site and diggin' the site itself.....a TON! Flymphs were the first thing i ever got into.....and i love nothin' more than foldin' and wrapin' hackle.........all my flies really are, is some crazy psychadelic combination of soft hackles, streamers, Salmon flies, with a serious Spey and Steelhead influence, sometimes with a bead thrown in, anyway. DAMN, "write that down." Seriously though.....there is a ton of great info here at this site, and it's a lotta fun to go through and see what's been contributed by a lot of wonderful tyers.
