cdc soft hackle
Cdc soft hackle. I've used cdc on a damsel before and it got good movement in the water so thought i would try a soft hackle.

Re: cdc soft hackle

Re: cdc soft hackle
Its fur and guard hairs from an olive hairs mask Aaron.
Re: cdc soft hackle
The CDC hackle has an advantage I find in slower pools and pockets of water.
Less so in faster streams
Just in general not with your damsel.
Nice one

Re: cdc soft hackle
Its mostly lochs that i fish so the cdc hackle should work there.
Re: cdc soft hackle
You might want to try a ginger version ribbed with fine copper wire at the smaller end of natural size spectrum--the goal being to imitate the immature damsel. Similar patterns fish beautifully on a clear intermediate line as a single fly, but would probably work well in any rig where you would normally use a cruncher or the like.greenock wrote:Its mostly lochs that i fish so the cdc hackle should work there.
I'm sure you have similar flies already in you quiver, but I think the CDC would lend itself well to this application.
Just a thought.

Cheers for the tips Aaron this fly was just a play about at the vice. The damsel i tied was differnt. Re the ginger do you find that works better for you when you imitate a damsel nymph? I've tryed the ginger/brown damsel nymphs over here and had nothing to them its all olives over here they'll go for.

Re: cdc soft hackle
The trick is getting a shade of ginger approaching tan with highlights of orange...
Okay maybe not quite that specific although that is the colour a local commercial tyer specified. Forgetting about the orange, ginger approaching tan is the right hue for most waters--no brown at all (although I sometimes use ginger furnace hen for the hackle). Keep them small (ie #12 3xl).

In June 2005, Fly Fishing and Fly Tying
magazine published a good article on
CDC Spiders by Sandy Nelson.

I have a copy of the article.
