Light Snipe

I asked someone earlier for spider imitation recommendations for Pale Watery's so here is my take on a light snipe.

Hook: Kamasan B890 Size 16 (short shank so about a std 18)
Thread: Pearsalls Primrose very very lightly waxed
Hackle: Snipe Undercovert - tricky flimsy little hackles

Fetching little fly, otter! Beautiful and delicate just like a real insect.

Possibly, but if its a two pounder I'd glady tie a dozen of these - flimsy hackle or not.

I will tie up a few with Starling undercoverts and give them a try as well.

Its like being back at school. Taking each food item, looking at recommendations and at the tried and tested patterns - getting materials , tying a few , stuffing them in the box and waiting for oppurtunities to test them. Added to that my lack of experience in fishing spiders I suspect its gonna take a season or three to reduce the possibilities into a defined set of flys and a sparser more practical fly box.

All good fun but at least with a good few seasons under the belt at river fishing unlike my journey with dries at least I know what I want to achieve and how best to get there. I have to admit that the journey so far into the world of spiders , soft wings, soft hackles, flymphs has been extremely enjoyable and it is a pleasure to work with mainly natural materials. I also owe many people here and elsewhere a great deal of gratitude in sharing their hard won knowledge which has made it all a lot easier - sorry if this sounds like a speech from the Oscars

Otter that is quite nice. These flies are much more durable than you might think. Some last...some don't.

I would fish it upstream.
