Partridge Marabou (neat little feather discovery)

I discovered a very cool little micro marabou feather on my have a hungarian partridge skin. The feathers are located on the sides of the partridge skin, just at the base of the tail, in the hip-area. The feathers are a pale dun, with some faint mottling. The tails on each of these flies are made with these micro-marabou feathers.


Hook - Mustad Model R50/Size 10
Thread - 70 Denier UNI-Nylon (Black)
Tail/Butt - Hungarian Partridge Micro Marabou Feather
Body - Wool Yarn Dubbing (Claret)
Hackle - Hungarian Partridge Hackle

Abdomen - Hungarian Partridge Micro Marabou Feather (tyed in by the tip and wrapped forward to form fuzzy abdomen)

Hackle - Hungarian Partridge Hackle

Yeah, my partridge skin is mostly used up. I've pulled so many feathers off it, that the center of the back is all gone. It's down to the wings, sides and tail. I will be buying a new one soon, but this one is still giving up some useful feathers. I think this partridge skin was the best $25 I ever spent on fly tying materials. I sure have gotten a lot of use out of it, that is for sure.

This is elegant, Ray. I've also noticed this particular partidge feather, but never used it in a dressing. Perhaps you should call it "Hun-A-Boo" when you write the article; there is similar stuff from chickens being marketed (Hareline I think) as "Chick-A-Boo", which I have used as tailing material on wooly buggers.

"Hun-a-Bou" That is a great name for these feathers! I can see the marketing folks coming out with "New and improved Hungarian Partridge skins, now featuring Hun-a-Bou feathers" (Price $35 dollars).

Well I wish you would tell me where in Canada you get any kind of capes , saddles or skins...every decent looking item i see ends up either out of stock or "does not ship to Canada"!

Chick-a-boo was coined by Mr. Henry Hoffman I believe. One of the great hackle providers of days gone past. He still ties at some shows and sells old stock. A wonderful person to talk to.

Nice use of those feathers Ray. I've used them before, much in the same manner but you put much more effort forward with them than I ever have. Great work.

I'm not sure where you are Lykos. I picked up my partridge skin at a shop in Fergus ON called Grand River Troutfitters. They are very good at ordering things you need but I don't know how much shipping would be. It is close enough for me to drive (about 45 min) so I was able to pick the skin but it was definitely more than Ray's. It was a very good skin, good colour, well preserved, lots of good feathers even had the skin from the head. I don't know what I'll ever do with those feathers though. They must be about a size 30!
