My wife came up with the name of this fly. She said the color combination reminded her of the Disney character.

Now that, sir, is a brookie fly. That's a wonderful taper to the abdomen as well--I'll have to hunt up that particular thread as well.

CB - You can find the woolly nylon material in the sewing section of any Joann Fabric store. The stuff comes on spools of 1000 meters for around 5 dollars. I bought a spool of the white to use as underbodies. It makes incredibly smooth bodies. Woolly nylon is very similar to UNI-Stretch, with a slightly larger diameter. I started using woolly nylon a few years ago, after watching some of the full dress salmon tyers using it to create large tapered bodies. Great stuff!

Excellent, thanks for elaborating on the materials: any significance to your using Uni-nylon for this pattern?

Also, if I could ask a favor: any chance of you posting a photo of the woolly nylon you're talking about? I pester the poor gals working there enough looking for various and sundry silk materials.

CB - The main reason I used UNI-Nylon on this fly is it's size (small diameter). The woolly nylon can add bulk in the head area, so I chose a fine diameter thread to compensate. I find that I can tye smaller heads with this thread and it has the advantage of going completely flat when it has no twist. It is easily split with a needle, making it ideal for inserting a little dubbing to form the body on flies. The only disadvantage I can find is that it can fray or break if you apply too much pressure. Like all things, it just takes a little getting used to.

CB - Here is a photo of the woolly nylon material (the large spool). I filled an empty thread spool with this material so that I can tye with a standard bobbin. I simply mounted a wooden dowel in my cordless drill, slid the empty thread spool over the dowel. Attach the end of the woolly nylon to the empty spool and start the drill and wind on the desired amount. As you can see, one spool of woolly nylon is probably a lifetime supply...
