Yes, it is Chinese rooster. The barbs are not all that hard--I've got genetic hen that's stiffer. I've been using this particular cape for a few years. It's close enough for me to call it a "soft hackle".
I like the first in the series too. It's probably the best tied and it is very similar to patterns I fish regularly. It's identified on Tenkara USA as a "mayfly caddis variant" (or at least I think so without looking). The last fly is finished at the rear and didn't come out nearly as nice as some of Mark's examples of the style, but It has the "fullness" of the original examples I've seen.
Unfortunately none of my shots were used in the article, but apparently there's a good shot of my bum while I'm tenkara fishing (my 15 minutes of rather embarrassing fame ).
