I am amazed at the likeness of that fly to the natural, now I think we all need at least a recipe if not a full tutorial on tying that caddis pattern.

love it, give every pattern a turn of hackle and it bring's the fly to life, this is a great example, thanks for sharing.

Wayne - I went back and looked at your initial post and I am reminded of Doug's recent green beasty pattern. I think you will find that Doug's pattern would make a great scud pattern as well.

I am in complete agreement. I have the Beasties in my box and I am ready for tomorrow. Just happens to be a small scud population where I am fishing.

DUBBN, I agree completely. I started tying this pattern about a year ago and it has worked very well for me. It is basically Frank Sawyer's Killer Bug, which he described as an immitation of gammarus pulex (what we call scuds) with a turn of hen pheasant hackle.

Hook: Daiichi 1550 size 14
"Thread": Ultra-Wire Small, copper
Body: Jamiesons Shetland Spindrift yarn, (color Sand) colored with Prismacolor marker (concidentally, also color Sand)
Hackle: Hen Pheasant covert

WOW! great to see this thread back on the scene.......i had never really put a lotta thought to the whole scud/soft hackle connection..........but it makes perfect sense........ESPECIALLY on the White River here...........the Scud is prolly THE most prolific bug on this river.......and soft hackles WORK! here tremendously well. ........."and then there was light!" Ding! AND Dong!

Chris, your fly is gorgeous.......WAY COOL tye.

One wonders if the soft hackle is taken for a scud or whether the fly just appears ambiguously, irresistibly edible, a masterpiece of minimalist impressionism.

CM, I have surmised for years about Scuds and Soft Hackles. Not being a fish I cant prove it, but I am pretty sure thay do take them as a scud.
