You got it! Actually, these are plastic grapes! Sorry this photo didn't turn out well. I'm working on it. May have to ditch the fruit until I get the lighting issue figured out. Having fun though!

Izaak, don't ditch the fruit. I like em. The lighting can be tough. Are you shooting in RAW, and shooting a digital gray-card for white balance? The other thing that has fouled me up is mixing two different light sources, such as tungsten and flourescent, or tungsten and daylight. Really messes up the color. But the photo and the fly are both gorgeous.

up till now I've been using 3 lamps, each with a 10watt florescent bulb. one lamp from above and each side. Some of the photos I have posted have also had a bit of natural light. I know this can mess up the color, but I have been able to "fix" the white balance a bit using iPhoto on my iMac. however, on this last photo I was unable to salvage much. thinking about getting some brighter lamps/bulbs. Not familiar with the acronym RAW, but I am not using a grey card. My current set up is using my point and shoot pocket size digital camera with the "correct" white balance setting and a small table top tripod. I did build a homemade light box using a cardboard box and tissue paper. I have been using it in all the photos I have posted but may try something different, or at least try the light box with brighter lights. Thanks for your kind words about the fly, and the fruit!

Izaak, Your photos are great. Keep doing whatever you're doing. However, brighter lights might be a good idea. That would fix the color distortion caused by unwanted sources such as daylight coming through a window. Also, you might want to look into the color temperature of available bulbs that would fit your light stands. I was amazed when I went to Home Depot and saw energy-saving florescent bulbs with different color temperatures for sale.
RAW format is not within the capability of most of the low-end cameras. But RAW gives you much more editing control over the image, including color temperature—things that are impossible in jpeg or tiff. I don't use iPhoto, so I don't know if it has a RAW processor. But I know Photoshop Elements does. Here is a link with some information about RAW from a photography teacher. He says that jpeg is like a polaroid, not really much you can do with it. But RAW is like having a negative that you can manipulate in the darkroom.
