Pheasant Tail Nymph
Hook: #12 Veniard Light Nymph
Silk: Pearsall hot orange.
Tail: Three cock pheasant fibres.
Rib: Fine gold wire.
Body: Pheasant tail fibres.
Thorax: Dark hare’s ear fur.
Hackle: Partridge.
McCaskie’s Green Cat
Hook: #14 Veniard Light Nymph
Silk: YLI Bright orange.
Body: Lightly touch dubbed with Green Camel dubbing.
Hackle: Dark dun hen.
For some reason I cannot understand, the colour of the body dubbing,
of the Green Cat, does not show. I'll have to think about this.

You're on a roll Donald. I particularly like that first. It is very similar to one that's a staple in my fly box.

I should have said, that is Leisenring's March Brown, not just any old
Pheasant tail nymph.
Here is one I dressed a good few years ago, it looks better.

Donald - I laughed when I read your comment "that is Leisenring's March Brown, not just any old Pheasant tail nymph". 
I'm easy, I'd be happy seeing any old pheasant tail as well. Great flies, by the way.

You are reliable for posting the most wonderful "roots" flies. Thank you.
I have posted this photo before, but it is relevant to this string. It is in Pete Hidy's collection, almost certainly tied by him. For nymphs, he and Leisenring often used short hackles like this. Looks like the hackle is two-thirds the length of the shank, or less.

Lance - While looking at the back end of the fly, I notice at two different color threads being used (at least I think that is what I am seeing). Can you confirm this?
On another note, aesthetically, I love the barbs on these old hooks. They are beautiful to my eyes. I know they are hell on the fish, and not suitable for catch-and-release fishing practices. To my eye, the harpon-like barbs added a lot of character to the flies & are interesting to look at.

They are bad hookers as well. It requires a lot more force to set a rank barb.
