I believe in Dog

Post by gingerdun » Sun Mar 11, 2012 1:14 pm

My cocker spaniel, Sam, has a white and brown coat. Wanting to tie pale flymphs, I snipped locks of his white fur to dub on a Clark Spinning Block.

GRIZZLY SAM
Hook: 14 Grip 14732BL
Thread: Pearsall's white silk
Tag: Silver mylar
Body: Cocker spaniel spun on Pearsall's white
Hackle: Grizzly hen

And here is the dubbing factory:

Lance - Great fly. I cracked up as I scrolled down and looked into the eyes of your "dubbing factory". He seems to be saying "Save me...my owner is a fly tyer".

My wife just came in and saw the photo and started laughing too. Then I showed her Wayne's photos. Hysterical...

Wayne,
I remember this post from before....Still chucklin' over that one. This animal has dark tan flymph written all over it. Do you remember Ross our bluish gray tomcat? I haven't harvested any belly fur from him lately. I wonder if he even remembers that adventure. You got me thinking now! C'mere Ross....
Gingerdun, stunning looking pattern! How did Sam react to his haircut?
You know fellows, the world is our oyster as far as dubbings go! What unusual furs or feathers are in your storage boxes?

You could probably use that Blue cat fur for a muskrat substitute. ;)

The most exotic material I have is Blue Wildebeest. I used the mane as midge material.

Really nice use of a readily available material!
I have used combings and clippings from my two GWP's for tying material before...... talk about guard hairs. :D

Himalayam Thar would perhaps be the most exotic dubbing I have, but they roam wild here so not that exotic to NZ and they beat the dog hands down for guard hair length!

Lance,

All great stuff, but what's with that radical hook??? 8-)

Well done!

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Unfortunately, the dog hair has terrible hydrofuge. I shot it submerged, and it captured only a tiny bubble. I think in the future I'll stick with the traditional, tried and true dubbing furs. I had to photograph the fly upside-down which is why the bubble looks like it is on the bottom of the fly in this rotated shot.

And Hans, I have done a comparison scan of the Grip, Tiemco, and Daiichi hooks. They seem quite similar in design. I wonder if the design differences are detectable in performance? The biggest difference is the side-bend in the Daiichi 1251.

Lance,

Thanks for the comparison shot.

All three tie a mean fly, and I doubt there will be anything in practical difference. That said, the subtle differences in proportions and shape have them ranked in my order of preference: Grip, Tiemco, Daiichi.

Cheers,
