Windfall
A very dear friend of my well into her 80's has gifted me all her fly tying "stuff." This includes, but is not limited to, all sorts of hackles!!! It was serendipitous! I went over to drop off some Basil and she just offered it up. She isn't well and doubted she would be tying any longer. So there you go. One door closes another opens. Now I can tie for the warm water swap.

Funny how friendship has so many rewards that you never expect.
I know you'll make good use of those items.

Wow, did you ever luck out on that!! Congrats. I hate that the older lady won't be able to tie anymore. But she found the right person to gift it to. I am very happy for you. Enjoy!!

Re: Windfall
This is also how I come across a lot of materials I use....... but mostly they are from estate sales where a grandkid has no need for the jumble of feather and fur that grandad had in a box in the shed when he passed on.
This was my signature on other forums before they split away from Yuku hosting: Bequeathed tying gear.....Flies will be made that weave together the absent person's dreams with those of the tier. Trout will rise to these new flies, and so the departed fisher fishes on.
Much better to be gifted the materials by the tier in person. You will treasure these items and they will have special meaning to you as you create with them.

Flies will be made that weave together the absent person's dreams with those of the tier. Trout will rise to these new flies, and so the departed fisher fishes on. This is a lovely sentiment. I am lucky for many things: Old Vises, older vices, new materials and long friendships. I think if anyone on this forum knows of anyone, young, middle or old, who is beginning to tie flies, it might be nice if we all could contribute in theory. (or practice) I can't begin to tell you how lucky I feel for not only the items I've received from people on this forum and fly fishing friends, but general essence of you all. Never before in all my years as a competitor/active participant in cycling/archery/swimming/fencing/equestrian activities have I ever ever met people as kind, generous and genuine as people on this forum. (Let me clarify that I belong to many forums.) But I ramble.

Ariel,
You are soo blessed! I want to join in with Ray's wise words on being blessed in turn with goodies from other friends who tie or have tied in the past! Show us some special things in the near future but most of all, show your dear friend! I can't wait to see!!

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.
