Hi guys met a fantastic last month Jeff Smith, he was over for a visit and he kindly visited me and gave me 2 beautiful books on Local fly patterns.
This weekend will see a major competition on lough Melvin , so here is a few patterns we are going to field test
the sunburst dabbler

hook-kamasan b170 size 10
tail flo yellow cock pheasant
thread veevus 16/0 black
body- chartreusse holo tinsel
rib emerald utc wire
body hackle- chartreusse grizzle
hackle- orange badger under flo green guinea
wing- fiery bronze mallard
jungle cock dyed picric

the sunburst bumble

butt-flo red thread
tail- flo yellow tippet
body- gold holo tinsel
body hackle - yellow badger
wing- picric dyed cdc
legs- claret cock pheasant
hackle- blue grizzle

Wow! Has the sun come out in Moira? or is it just those two wonderful bright new patterns?

Fiery Bronze mallard? Is this available commercially or is it a self-dyed preperation? Way cool looking Lough fly for Rainbow's I would imagine. Your Bumble looks like a mixture of Irish Mayfly and Crane fly..... one I like.... a lot!
Are the two of these to be fished in teams, or as single flies on the cast?

the bronze mallard is one i dye up commercially
the flies are fished as a team the bumble on the top dropper and the dabbler on the point, i usually put a middle dropper on such as a cock robin or a black olive

Thanks for the quick reply Lawrence. Some of us will probably be quite interested in the differing methods of fishing a three fly team Irish Lough style.

So you are targeting Rainbow trout with these? To me here in NZ we would use a lot more subdued colours for Brown Trout, Rainbows here tend to be more agressive and less "match the hatch" orientated. You can annoy a rainbow here with something bright and induce a strike, try the same on a big brown and he will sulk or turn tail and head for cover!

Nice flies, are for the trout (Gillaroo?) that shoal in the depths of loughs like Mask?
