A guess it would be....... it's not "grainy" enough for antler, so I am guessing beef thigh bone? The timber looks a little like the transition of ebony from heartwood to sapwood. Either way it is a new forend for a rod grip of the future...... anywhere close?

I am a tip to stem convert. In my uncivilized life I tied in by the stem and mutilated many hackles. Now I know better. Each year make it my mission to recruit while at the shows.

I need to make a video of my testimony. It has been on the burner way too long.

Actually all the methods work...tying in by the stem over the eye is just better.

Carl, I am feeling a little dense. Could you please be more specific about how you tie on your hackles? Are you saying you formerly tied on the tips, but now start by tying on the stem as in the Leisenring illustration? Or just the opposite?

BTW, this is a cool thread Boris. Beautiful flies.

Once upon a time, I believe it was Ray who posted a step-by-step on preparing a hackle for tying in. I can't seem to find it, but maybe he would post a link. (hint, hint. )
I am usually a tip man, but occasionally tie in by the stem.

Ray, that Jackdaw & Jade is like a piece of jewelry. The grees shades with the hackle contrast is almost royal.

Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. Try wetting it and stroking the hackle back, if it covers all the body or overpowers it the hackle might be a bit full. That isnt allowing for current or stripping though, you never know what it might look like in the water with them in account.
I say fish it and see, but tie some more with less hackle and see which out fishes the other.
