Re: Partridge Hackle
I might be an idiot but I always struggled with the hackle on a soft hackled fly until I read "Wet Flies" by Dave Hughes. His technique looks similar to the diagrams posted earlier in this thread and it worked wonders with me. I was never happy with the flies I tied until then and never fished them. Now a soft hackle is always part of my tandem rigs and more often than not I'm using them on a single fly rig.
Re: Partridge Hackle
Yes I used to tie in by tips years ago. After first reading the Leisenring method diagramed I was converted and have used that method ever since. I give others a hard time for enjoyment but I do feel it is a superior method in many aspects.gingerdun wrote:Carl, I am feeling a little dense. Could you please be more specific about how you tie on your hackles? Are you saying you formerly tied on the tips, but now start by tying on the stem as in the Leisenring illustration? Or just the opposite?Old Hat wrote:I am a tip to stem convert. In my uncivilized life I tied in by the stem and mutilated many hackles. Now I know better. I need to make a video of my testimony. It has been on the burner way too long.![]()
Actually all the methods work...tying in by the stem over the eye is just better.
BTW, this is a cool thread Boris. Beautiful flies.

I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.
