Very well done mister William!! Do you know why there is this dark red in The Iron blue dun. If I look at a Beatis Niger there is no dark red at all???

William,
SWEEEET! I have been a fan of the "less is more" school for a while and your pattern is so dog-goned elegant with so little material. I think the difference is the quality tying involved in this exquisite pattern. Sooo well done Willam! I hope you don't mind if I just stare at it for a while!

William, the profile on this one simply elegant. I am not a big fan of these style of hooks but you have nailed it on this one. It looks great.

Gosh, guys, thanks for all the kind remarks. I like this fly overall as well for the tones and body texture against that cool hackle. The partridge Carl sent is just beautiful and should make for a number of nice patterns in this darker range. I really appreciate it and promise to make good use of it.

Splymph occured to me too...and then I let it go. :D

Ruard, we have a couple early season mayflies that really do have a deep burgandy/brownish body with dark dun wings in the Eastern U.S. This is not an imitation to the extent that it could be, I don't usually play matchy match to that degree, but it would make a nice, realistic looking food item in the right tone and with the right action under the right conditions. I honestly don't know off the top of my head the fly originally imitated by the Iron Blue Dun in the UK. Shouldn't be too hard to find it.

I'd be curious to see a list and color chart for the naturals living in your local streams. That's something I don't think I've ever seen.

Thanks again.

Hi William,

We don't have local streams were I live, only canals. There are some insects in it that live a nimf stage in the water and there are some species of mayfly (caenis and cloëon) but not abundant. There are some species of sedges. There are many species of gnats and there are little scuds and sowbugs.

The colours are mostly brown or black. Most of the time I use a fly with much colour ( fluor and fosforiscend ) because the water could be very murky.
Here is a determination tabel, but all in Dutch.
