Daring Duffer Series - Fly Two

One of the nice things Stefan did was to include similar flies as pairs, either like these cousins, or the same fly on two different hooks. They make for interesting posts, besides the beautiful flies. Working flies for sure, but done with great style.

Stefan - These are simply superb flies. Highly fishable, yet gorgeous to look at. Can you tell us more about your two patterns? What choices did you make in the fly design, and why? I would like to hear the back-story for these patterns.

I have a friend who is a real fisherman. When using wet flies he always give them a drift as dry flies. Next drift they will be fishing as damp flies. Eventually they will fish deeper. I was thinking of him when tying these. Both are tied on Mustad 94942. Thread is probably gossamer. Tail is capercaille saddle (from Trappern; probably shot with a drilling). Body is overly dubbed in split thread hare's ear. This might give them two drifts as dry/damp. Thorax is another hare's face "wild" mix. Hackle is greenwellish cockerel (I think). One of them is ribbed with copper wire, the other might be ribbed with tying thread. I wanted the thread to show as a tag and the overall impression to be rough.

I really, really, REALLY like that top one, the thread ribbed one. It would drive my local piscatorial denizens psychotic!
I have been a fan of the split thread dubbing method since I saw Hans demonstrate it. I will have to break out my bunny face (my wife's name for it) and try a few of these. What sizes do you usually tie these in?

Thank you Kirk, I'm beginning to feel better now. If both you and the fish like my flies, all the better. Most of my flies are size 14 and 16. These are probably also tied in size 12.

Here you have a photo of the first car in our family. DKW F7. It was given to us by my grandpa in 1958 and manufactured 1938. 18hp! (Not our car in the picture). Six children in the back seat. The matte black is a synthetic called "pegamoid". We polished it with black shoe polish and it was just beautiful.
