Showing flies
I just got the new FlyRod&Reel magazine. Looking through the articles many flies appear, all dry, none wet. Hold on! By dry I mean 'having not been in water and by wet taken and dipped in water. I wonder why flies are shown as they will appear to the fish. Curious. Why is this? I always place flies in water to see how they'll look. Not that I know how a fish sees things, I still look at it from a human perspective, but it seems more realistic to show them down and dirty.

Ariel,
One of the nice features of our forum is that, by request, some of the members have in the past shown their patterns in both stages, dry and wet, and the transformation is astonishing! Have you ever carefully picked up line, leader, and fly and allowed the fly to settle on your hand or finger with a generous bead of water surrounding it? What an eye opener especially on scantly dressed patterns. The bending back of the hackles over the body forms a veil around it and is most life like. No wonder the fish go nuts over them! I think we are on to something here!

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.
