Olives work for me year round on the Freestone rivers. The thing I like about them, I don't need a fancy pattern to be successful. I have a lot of different Olive patterns in my fly boxes. They range from thread bodied flies to Midge tubing with a wire core. These patterns fall in between somewhere. I will start using them when the rivers start to dirty a bit. Perhaps they represent the big Green Drakes that are preparing to emerge in a few weeks to a few months (June to September), depending on the river. Perhaps they are just darn good attractor patterns.
I should tie some up with a Peacock thorax. That would be more traditional. We'll see.
