Swap suggestion feeler.

One of the most treasured materials that Jeff sent through customs was feral cat.
Thanks to the vigilance of various FF attendees in Roscoe, I got a nice little sample of black feral cat, tucked away in the back of my CRV to be discovered when I returned home to Merrimac.
Did everyone else get their fair share?
If not, I'm happy to send a square clipping of the pelt to anyone who sends me their address.
I have a non-feral black cat living here with me in my home, and he has some concerns about this, but since he can't speak or write, we'll leave it at that.
Anybody have any favorite kitty cat flymph patterns?
Lance

So the mascot only lasted a week?
I had visions of it ending up as some kind of dunce hat for the next gathering and never be used for the intended purpose.
They make fine dubbing for wet flies Lance- do not be too quick to banish it all and have no fear, that one may have been related distantly to your house pet- but you would have never petted this one- especially if it were cornered. These things can de-glove the flesh from your hands faster than you can get them out of the way and if the suckers bite you odds are you will soon be on some of the strongest antibiotic known to man in a short period of time (just after your entire arm swells to over twice its normal size and you near pass out from the pain).
Same genus as your pet- but not similar in manner nor diet. You having that pelt means a few of our native birds and reptiles get to live a bit longer. Very fair trade off I feel.

I have 3 cats. I need to give them all a brushing. One of them is a shedder. The one with the coolest fur, does not shed really. She is also the least likely of letting me cut a patch of hair off of her too. I think she was wild. Either her mama left her here, or someone dropped her off here. I tried to find her a home, but nobody wanted her. She is the best huntress cat I have. She is 3 now. I only know of one guy who uses cat fur for his flies. They are beautiful, and you'd never know it was cat fur. His cat is getting older. I guess it is also used to a pair of scissors now and then. I got a little hair off of the older cats. (not an easy task) I used the hair for a Cat's Whisker pattern. My daughter was not happy. (one of them was HER cat...lol) I got maybe two snips off of each cat. I decided to stop there, before I got clawed.
My dogs are all smooth haired, and none would have good hair for fly tying.

As Jeff pointed out, feral cats are anything but domesticated animals. They take a frightful toll on small birds, mammals and reptiles. I like cats, but you won't find me shedding any tears when feral cats are whacked.

Re: Swap suggestion feeler.
Ladies, I must stress- these were not domestic pets, nor were they ever, in fact where they came from I imagine they are several generations removed from domesticated stock and are very feral.
They are considered a major pest here (you have to remember some of our native birdlife, like Kiwi and Kakapo are flightless, near blind, ground dwellers, extremely endangered and very susceptible to predators) toward native birds, small mammals and reptiles. They also carry and transmit a type of salmonella that causes pregnant ewes to abort lambs.
They are more wild and more of a threat than any other readily available wild fur here like Hare or Possum.

You're killing kittens for dubbing material? Shame on you...they make much better zonkers. (running and ducking as Hans puts it).

Damn... no matter how "incorrect" that statement is, it is just plain funnyWilliam Anderson wrote:You're killing kittens for dubbing material? Shame on you...they make much better zonkers. (running and ducking as Hans puts it).
