PMD/PED Flymph

Post by Ron Eagle Elk » Mon May 17, 2010 9:32 pm

Tom Travis, a Montana guide and excellent fly tier, posted a version of this fly that looked a bit more like a traditional soft hackle. I adjusted the placement of some materials, most specifically the thorax feather and the hackle, and came up with this. This is also the fly I tied for the IBOF Swap #13.

PMD/PED Flymph

Hook: Mustad 98482 Size 14
Thread: Gordon Griffith Sheer 14/0 black or gray
Tail: Wood Duck Flank Fibers
Rib: Fine Copper wire
Abdomen: PMD or PED Dubbing
Hackle: Medium Dun Hen
Thorax: Partridge Aftershaft Feather

To wrap the thorax and hackle I tie the hackle in by the butt facing over the hook eye, then the Aftershaft feather on top of that. Then, to protect the fragile feather stem, I wrap the aftershaft feather around the tying thread, then wrap it on the hook shank to meet the abdomen. With the thread hanging at the abdomen, I then wrap the hackle back through the aftershaft feather, catching it in with a turn of thread. The thread is then wrapped in open turns to the eye of the hook and a small head is made. The excess hackle can be snapped or cut off.

That looks very nice Ron. The aftershaft thorax should give that fly what I call a nice "pulse". I have never used the technique on a PMD but have used an ostrich feather in the same manner for many stonefly flymph patterns. Can't wait to see it in person. :D

That's really pretty, Ron. It would kill as a sulphur pattern here in the mid-Atlantic and points north.
