Red Spider Pattern

Simple pattern using scarlet Pearsall's gossamer silk thread (well waxed) and a young wood duck rump feather on a Sawada hook. The rump feather is a nice dun along the rachis and leads into an iridescent red with white tips. These were found on the top sides of the rump. I left the wax off the head and used some glossy head cement to get the bright red contrast.

Dapper little fly, Carl. Your fly has given me an idea. I'd like to try a fly with a light colored biot under body (running straight along the top half of the hook shank - perhaps sticking out the end as a sort of tail). I think you could get a two-tone body with this method. Sorry, don't mean to send this thread off in another direction. I just get inspired each time I see your flies.

I was thinking the same thing, in fact you can barely see on this fly how the stem of the hackle across the top lends to a slight two-toned appearance top to bottom.

That is exactly what caught my eye, and got me thinking. I think the black hook emphasizes the depth of color.

A little tinsel under the thread also has a nice effect in this situation.
