I find that sharptail grouse hackle to be striking on this fly. It's more boldly marked than the woodcock upper wing coverts I use when a pattern calls for that bird. As for the herl, I've used mallard flank fibers as a sub for heron when approximating a Kite Spider, and it has worked reasonably well.

I hadn't thought about mallard flank, will have to try that one and see how it looks.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

The mallard is quite soft and delicate compared with heron herl, so I tie in two or three fibers and gently twist them together before making the palmer wraps. Note: Coloring them with a "Cool Gray" Pantone pen makes them look more like heron.
