Stripping one side of the hackle gives you greater control over the amount of hackle, and how sparse/full you want the hackle fibers. I like to take a wrap or two closely at the front (just behind the eye), then open up the wraps as I move towards the back of the thorax. This gives enough space for the โlegsโ (hackle) to stick out all along the thorax, much like a living insect.
