Alice ties professionally and to order - so the pattern selection, and number, of her regular output is dictated by orders. Often one extra gets tied of a pattern to go onto the Flytier's Page heap

To please herself she also ties one-offs - many of the ones shown in this thread fall into that group.

What does the term "on-offs" signify? I'm not familiar with that expresssion. Thanks - Bill

Mine is the Willow Fly.
There is something ( remember... I'm still new and haven't even tied one yet), I do not know what one would call it, just behind the head, on top, lighter shade, right behind the first wrap of hurl (I am trying to learn). Would it be considered part of a shuck? An imitation gas bubble? How is it done and with what ?
So many questions, so much to learn...

Hankaye I suspect what you are seeing is nothing more than the butt end of one of the hackle barbs. Notice on the bottom and about in that same area a bit of orange thread showing also. Really one needs to marvel at the perfection that goes into these flies as they are enlarged from actual size several times. Sometimes though we must remind ourselves it isn't a perfect world.

If you are referring to a small patch of brown inbetween the herl wraps, what you see is a the reflection off some bare herl 'stem', which has a waxy appearance.
