My fishing mate who knows more than i ever will about the practicalities of this game suggests a ration of 3 - 4 for tippet to hook size. So, a hook size of 12, say, would take a tippet of 4X. This is of course rough and ready, but acts as a guide.

Thinking about this now, it is a load of bollocks! :lol: I regularly fish a #14 on a 6X & 7x and the world hasn't stopped turning on its axis... Must have a word with him about that... ;)

But, point is, might be pushing it a bit on such fine tippet on weighted #12 hook, so where and how to compromise in such clear water?

I'm beginning to realize that NOTHING is set in stone as far as this fly fishing thin is concerned.
What works works! What dosen't today may tomorrow, so don't let go of that idea. Keep trying.
