My fishing mate who knows more than i ever will about the practicalities of this game suggests a ration of 3 - 4 for tippet to hook size. So, a hook size of 12, say, would take a tippet of 4X. This is of course rough and ready, but acts as a guide.
Thinking about this now, it is a load of bollocks!
I regularly fish a #14 on a 6X & 7x and the world hasn't stopped turning on its axis... Must have a word with him about that... 
But, point is, might be pushing it a bit on such fine tippet on weighted #12 hook, so where and how to compromise in such clear water?
