Hi Dubbin,
I came up with the fly in my late teens early twenties, the cusp. An giant eastern adult stonefly was the inspiration. I was aware of the Sofa Pillow but It was not what I would imagine a adult to look like. I tied the wing at the halfway point. The thorax was visable and a different color than the body, as per natural. Also the added the tail. I did not stack the wing as I felt the unstacked hair gave a better representaion of a Ovipositing Stonefly ,wings flapping and dipping the eggs. Also I bent streamer hooks to give it the ovipositing look. Similar to the sofa pillow yes, different yes. Far different then a Quill Gordon compared to a Dark Hendrickson.

I graduated highschool with Jim (it's amazing either one of us made it) and can vouch that the stimulator is a "Slattery Special"...

To me it is the only one out there with that much "eat me" to it, though I am too a fan of the sofa pillow and clarks stone for that matter.

I never really used the Stimulator very much. There are people that put it through its paces during the Salmonfly hatch here in Colorado, but I'm not one of them. The only time (and it's rare) I use a large dry is when I am dropping a Flymph and a Nymph off of one. In those cases a foam dry like the Chernobyl Ant and the Charlie Boy Hopper are my choices. They are made of foam and float longer. They are strike indicators with a hook protruding from them.

Jim, I am glad you are fortunate enough to have an old high school chum come to the forum and vouch for you and your creation.

Yeah I lost track of my old compadre for about 20 years... but was able to get back in touch and actually got to spend a week at the Campfire Lodge last July... to experience the finest dry fly fishing for rainbows and browns that I have ever experienced to date.

God when I think back... we used to fly fish the beaverkill by covered bridge campground back in the mid 70's... when the trout stopped rising there was always the "see who could hook who" fly casting wars...LOL... when we were still in school we'd tie fly's all winter and sell them out the back of Jims van for some extra spending money come spring time at the no-kill fly stretch on the good 'ol musconetcong river... growing up fly fishing in Jersey didn't get any better than that...

Like that line Jim. I find that my own luck increased manifold when I divested myself of bag loads of irrelevant stuff, and with that lighter load I fish a lot better. Now if you would like to discuss opportunity , bar divorce, opportunity shall remain a problem for quite a while to come

That is my mantra. Now I can even tie that way without as much guess work and head scratching , wich translates on the stream as well.
