Beautifully executed Ray. A very nice mix of colors in this one.

I need to play with the black backgrounds more. I have never quite figured them out for photos.

Carl - I recently bought to some black felt, and wanted to play around with it as a photo background (non-glare / high contrast). I cut a square piece of the felt, which I then secured to my backdrop with a pair of powerful magnets (the silver circle in the upper left hand corner - the second magnet is on the back side). The magnets make easy to removed or repositioned the felt. I also use these magnets to hold photos, or paint sample cards in place, for as different backgrounds.

I am still learning how to get the exposure settings to work with such a dark background. The shutter speed is so slow, you definitely need to use a tripod.




Fun to play with.

If you look carefully at the stem of my vice, you can see that I have placed two of these magnets on the screw head used to adjust the tilt of the vice head. These magnets let me hang small tools (usually dubbing twisters) within easy reach. I love these little things.

That is a sweet looking pattern Ray, extremely well executed. One day when I grow to be a real boy, I am going to get me one of them cool vices as well.

Ray, you still surprise me sometimes. I love the herl body and the thorax hackle is such a nice blend with that dubbing. Cool fly.

Like this very much Ray. The ginger tail marries with the tup's dubbing really well.
Have you coloured the ginger yourself Ray?

Martin - No. I did not dye the pheasant tail myself. I bought these in this color. It is my understanding, that these have been bleached to lighten the color. The fibers are a mottled tan color (ginger). A beautiful color for tying mayflies.

I'd like to dye some of these to a medium dun (grey).

Not to mention a sub-concious colouration engrained each time you glance in a mirror?

I've spent another evening preparing dubbing brushes for the swap flies, while watching a movie. Time consuming, but nicely relaxing.

Ray, these photos are exquisite. What a delightful thread.
