Cdc floats fine for a while, but it gets waterlogged and loses its bouyancy before very long. Some of the lost bouyancy can be restored by false casting or, even better, drying with an amadou patch. A dusting of powdered floatant such as Frog Fanny will also help.

Experimenting with CdC to get the fly to float in the surface film. Anyone have experience with that?

Allen McGee showed us this technique in his book. I have fished cdc/soft hackles the last couple of seasons - they float very well, and like tie2fish says, a couple of false casts are enough to keep them on the surface. Here's one of mine, tied with Pearsall's Hot Orange, touch dubbed with hare's ear, gold rib and a couple of wraps of cdc and grouse.
