Probably one of the most dependable patterns out there. Very nicely tied.

There was a fly similar to this one, "invented"/popularized by Dr Thomas Sanctuary (friend of GS Marryatt, HS Hall and FM Halford). He used a Coch-y-Bondhu hackle and probably fished it as a dry fly. I would be surprised if it wasn't fished wet as well...

The Sanctuary:
Dark Hare's ear fur on primrose silk
ribbed with flat gold tinsel
C-y-B hackle

A beautiful alternative to your excellent fly.

A Courtney Williams lists a short description:
"Hackle: Coch-y-Bondhu
Body: Dark hare's ear ribbed with flat gold
Hook:14"
(page 303 in "A Dictionary of Trout Flies and of Flies for Sea-trout and Grayling" A&C Black, fifth edition 1973).

It is listed without tail in "A guide to river trout flies" by John Roberts, The Crowood Press, 1989.

I promise I won't tell if you tie it with a tail...

(I tied one as a damp/wet fly yesterday, with a rusty spangled Coch-y-Bondhu hackle. It was absolutely beautiful. My first fly for quite some time).

I just tied another. Ten days of high fever does something to both vision and steadiness of hands. This one was beautiful too. Not that I can see it, but I know what materials used. Hare's fur, Overton, primrose silk and gold twist; a guarantee for success. You don't even need a hackle. (I used C-y-B).

Next one will be partridge.
