Oliver Edwards ties them exactly as stated in Stewart's book:

That was a great video; Mr. Edwards fingers are far more talented than mine. Stewart's black spider is always in my vest even if it does make me pull my hair out while tying it.

glad to know I'm not the only one who pulls his hair out!

Thank you, dd, for the video. It sounded like he was speaking in a Scandinavian dialect but his method was clear though. Thank you again.
Yes, he is Swedish as am I. He uses two hackles to 'make it more full' and starts with tying 'a ball' at the eye of the hook to make the hackle stand out. He wets his fingers to preen the hackles forward, not to tie them down. Works fine, I have tried it.
And yes, some hackles are more brittle than others. Age and storing, I guess...

Oliver Edwards has a Scandinavian accents? Jeez, its north county English. Maybe he should put up subtitles for those who already speak English.

Two different videos; Niklas Dahlin is Swedish and Oliver Edwards is, well you know.

Maybe my cocktail this evening was to strong.
Davie McPhail has a excellent Youtube video on tying The Black Spider.

Well, after watching both the Edwards and Dahlin videos I'm going to change how I tie that pattern. I didn't understand a thing Niklas said but I could understand everything he did.
