You sound smart.....most of us bought Guinea in small packages with half of it being crap for some period of time before we realized it was a much better idea to get the whole skin..... i got some KILLER skins now.....and here's a tip.
Course, depending on where you live.....you may not need this tip.....but. There's a lady in England named Christina who has a company called Chevron Hackles.....and she has Guinea skins to dye for. Stuff you'll never find here most likely, both natural and dyed. Google her.

Back in 1976, while on vacation in Yellowstone and vicinity, good friend JB mentioned that the year before, he had watched Lee Wulff tying in hand.

I had tried it a few times, so I said “I can do that”, and tied a LeTort Hopper to prove it.

But it got me thinking, and when I got home, I set to work.

Nemes first book was out and with it as my guide, I started tying.

I started with #10 or 12.

I tied 2-3 dozen, enough to be comfortable with the size, then dropped down a hook size, finally reaching size 18.

I did use a mini bobbin, using sewing machine spools.

I have been thinking of giving it another shot.

Tying in hand works a different part of your brain or something. I an trying it on some bigger flies. I started it by accident when I forgot my vise clamp while traveling.
