It will work well for lots of things, although some is a lot better for specific usages. It does not work well as wings on streamers for instance it tangles and knots very badly in a fairly short time, this is due to the surface properties of the wool strands. Icelandic sheep looks as though it would be very good for streamers, and it does look good on the bench, but it is disastrously poor in water, it knots and tangles imediately and is impossible to untangle again.

There are quite a few firms which do carded darning wools and similar, a lot of whch is excellent for various bodies. Some blended wools are also excellent for this the original Chadwicks is a blend of wool and nylon;

Some polypopylene yarn is also very useful, often sold as "Superbug" yarn in the UK. I have a very large selection of stuff like this and have found it useful for all sorts of things. I once got a very large sack of stuff like this at a "Flea-market" for very little money, and I have been using it ever since. A few cards of stuff, but I have a great deal more;

Good Morning Ray,
I am really liking your Orange Wool Bodied Streamer esp. when you interject the photo of the Smallmouth into the mix! Would heavy gold wire be even more durable than the braided ribbing? I would like to add this pattern to the ever increasing list posted on my bulletin board in the den. At the rate I am going, it may never get tied and tried in this lifetime! The entire discussion on wool and it's uses is fascinating! Thanks Otter for opening it up!

Hank - I recently ordered an entire skein of the Jamieson's Shetland Yarn from Chris. So as far as Chadwick's 477 sub, I am now set for life.

Here is one of my favorite wool sites. 100% mohair. It is extremely strong and has a nice sheen to it. I normally purchase the kid mohair and the 100% silk chenille is awesome as well.
