One reason dye lots can differ is that most dye colors are mixtures. For example, green is generally yellow plus blue. If you add a little red you get olive. No matter how thoroughly the dye powders are mixed; inevitably there will be some variation.

Awhile back, Pearsall's Embroidery made a batch of silk that pretty much matched the 6b color. A friend on the Classic Rod Forum sent me a spool and it was on a plastic spool. I think that Pearsall's Embroidery even included the decals used on the "regular" Pearsall plastic spools.

I have wooden spools of 6b that differ somewhat in color, what I suspect is different dye lots and UV deterioration of the silks. I also have some of Pearsall's Embroidery (6b) that does match the wooden spools I have.

Once again--thanks to everyone who commented about the "color identity" of my new spool of Pearsall's Gossamer. I received 2 samples of Pearsall's Gossamer from Phil Anderson. Neatly presented, side-by side on a small card and labeled: #6b Sherry Spinner and #32 Classic Chestnut. Thanks Phil!

Now I'm 100% sure my spool is #32 Classic Chestnut. Am I disappointed--sure; I thought I found a unicorn. But, it's still a new color in my arsenal, giving me 22 shades to pick from and it would be hard to beat 3 spools of Pearsall's Gossamer for $2.91!

I need to find a pattern that calls for Classic Chestnut while I continue the search for Sherry Spinner.

Tight Lines- Ken

It's always good to know what you have. When looking through my spools I fond a plastic spool in a shade similar to Sherry Spinner. When I hold the spools apart they look very close but when I hold them close together they don't look close at all. I conclude that this might be no 32 Classic Chestnut. It's pretty much in between 6A and 6B in electric 'daylight'. 6b is clearly darker close to this '32'. Ken, thanks to Phil you are not in darkness anymore.
Good luck with your hunt!
