Llama Straw and Spotted Hen

Post by William Anderson » Thu Jul 14, 2011 4:45 pm

Llama Straw and Spotted Hen
Hook: #12
Silk: Brown Griffiths 14/0
Body: natural llama hair twisted with #2 Straw Pearsall's Gossamer Silk
Thorax: natural llama twisted with tying silk.
Hackle: Spotted Hen Saddle

The combinations for this are endless with silks or flosses. The llama just makes an interesting material for the body. I need to find a new supply. If anyone knows of a source, I'd be interested.

I love this, william ... beautifully done, right down to the subtle taper and seamless transition from thorax to hackle.

I was surprised to read the hackle was hen. I was guessing it was Chukar flank.

Stunning fly, btw. The segmentation looks very natural, like a live insect.

Love the Model Perfect bend hook.

It usually seems like we're tying imitative/loosely suggestive flies and at times applying them at the best of times and just as often using them as attractors. I prefer if it works out closer. Sometimes it works. Sometimes its just about learning new techniques to approach an imitation. Sometimes it's just for fun.

I didn't take these, but I wish I had. I would like to do this kind of comparison post more often.

I just found this. I'm sure I posted it a while ago when I tied it. Cinnamon Turkey Tail and Spotted Hen Cape. It's just so similar to the llama fly I thought it was interesting to compare materials. Would have been nice to twist the yellow silk with the herl a bit more.

Yes -- similar effect, but the banding is more distinct on the llama version. It's feasible that one or the other could be more effective based on what's hatching that day. Either way, these are bound to be successful patterns. Nice!
