GITD (Glow-In-The Dark) Grub

Post by letumgo » Mon Sep 26, 2011 9:35 pm

Image
As seen under normal light.

Image
Crappy photo intended to show how the fly appears in low light conditions (Obviously, I need to work on my phosphorescent photography).

Glow-In-The-Dark Grub
Hook - Mustad R50-94840/Size 10
Thread - 8/0 UNI-Thread (White)
Body - UNI-GloYarn (White)
Hackle - Hen Saddle (Black)

This pattern was inspired by the ongoing thread discussing fluorescent materials in flies. Part of the discussion mentioned phosphorescent materials, which sent me off the the vice to play around. This fly is intended for fishing in very low light conditions (dark). The colors are chosen to provide a high contrast (black & white) and the body of the fly can be "charged" with a light source (flash bulb, led flashlight, etc.) to make it glow in the dark.

Have you been raiding laboratories? :)

I tried some phosphorescent moths a few times. I caught a couple of fish, but less than I caught using "normal" moth patterns. Of course, I didn't really expect much as there are no luminescent moths here.

Some info on bioluminescence ;

nice work on the body....I'm not a big fan of how the glow yarn is to work with, but you seem to have it mastered!!!

I had a couple strands of the material break when I was wrapping the body. Given a bit of practice, I can do better. ;)

Way to go Ray, that's a cool fly. I can imagine it's applications in warmer water. Might be just the thing.

I was actually thinking the same thing about it being a great warm water addition to a fly. I have a powder you add to the glue or epoxy or such and the when you use the fly you hit it with a light source. If I was salt water fishing (night snook fishing :shock: )I would definitely have used this stuff all up. I don't know how the trout / salmon will take to it ,so Ray I am anxiously awaiting your results
