How did you get the "spiky look" to the body? Is that a brown hackle palmered and then cut off short?

Maybe, but I'll bet the process is a helluva' lot simpler.

Ken, it is hackle that has been palmered from the eye back to the bend, then trapped with wire. The wire is then ribbed forward trapping the hackle. Just like a Woolly Bugger or Elk Hair Caddis. You can use Rooster dry, Hen, Schlappen. What ever you prefer. Grizzly or Brown hackle on a Cream Body has a nice look too. With or with out a hackle collar.
This pattern and about a dozen other Caddis nymph and emerger patterns are working right now for me.
